Calligraphy for Beginners: Online and In-Person Workshops

If you’re here, it means that you’re at least remotely interested in learning the art of calligraphy. With that I say: “Welcome!” AND “Just Start.”
Learning can be daunting, and usually the hardest part is starting. Here are some resources that helped me along with my own journey:

Online:

  • Skillshare: They have classes on everything here! It’s incredibly affordable, costing only $10, aka two Starbucks drinks. Just search “modern calligraphy” and you’re good to go.

  • Laura Hooper Calligraphy: Laura Hooper is one of the OGs! She has a full course available online for you to learn from - definitely one of the queens of calligraphy.

In-Person:

  • Seniman Calligraphy: This is where I took one of the beginner workshops that encouraged me to keep going with calligraphy! Ruth is an amazing teacher, down to earth, and made the class so fun. She provides ways to lessen the initial learning curve that tends to create a huge drop in people wanting to learn. Tips + techniques galore. (OC + LA area)

  • Angelique Ink: I’ve been drooling over her letterforms for a while now - you’ll find that her letters have unique flourishing (those pretty loop-de-loops around the letters) that give a distinct vibe. I’ve never taken her workshops, but the work definitely speaks for itself. (OC + LA area)

  • A Fabulous Fete: Honestly, to me she is the absolute QUEEN of effortless, gorgeous letters. She does brush lettering which I’m sure you’ve seen covering Pinterest boards and IG reposts galore. If you have a chance to learn from her, take it!

Inspiration:

Along your journey, you’ll inevitably run out of juice and get discouraged. It’s great to whip out artists that create in the style you like to keep you motivated, to give you a goal to reach for. Here’s a few of my faves from IG:
